It can be a bit frustrating to find a wealth of historical info on famous moonshiners because most of them led a life in the shadows and left behind few, if any, tracks. They did everything they could to stay under the radar and remain elusive to “revenuers” or tax agents.
But I have come across a few resources that shed light on some of the Appalachian moonshiners of yesteryear:
- Driving With the Devil: Southern Moonshine, Detroit Wheels, and the Birth of Nascar (book)
- Legendary Moonshiners of North Carolina (site)
- Moonshine Heritage (site)
In these texts, you’ll get a peek into the lives of legendary distillers such as Percy Flowers and Nick Williams, as well as others including Amos Owens, Buck O’Hairen, Junior Johnson and more.
